Money. This is one thing we researched a lot. Sadly, that's one of the first things that comes to mind when people hear the word, Adoption. How much does an adoption cost?
An adoption has MANY variables (domestic vs. international, distance to travel, agency fees, age of child, race of child, number of children, travel expenses, lodging, meals, etc.) On average, an adoption can cost anywhere from$5,000-$50,000 for international or domestic adoption. Adopting from foster care or privately is often times much less.
How could anyone even consider adopting after hearing those numbers? To us, it was not about the money, it was about the child. For us, it was about trusting that if this was what God was calling us to, then we knew He would provide. We didn’t expect God to just drop money in our laps, instead we knew we needed to work a little extra, save, fundraise, and look for financial assistance. We knew if adoption was His plan, the money should not be something that swayed our decision to say “yes” to adopt. We were fully aware that this would cost a lot, especially for a newly married couple. However, we believed our God was bigger than our fears.
Why does adoption cost so much? What does it all cover? The costs can cover any of the following: foster home service for birthmother (if necessary), medical fees, counseling, infant foster care, ongoing updates of child, legal fees, court fees, medical exams, retreats, agency fees, etc. All these things are necessary and worth paying.
We’re not going to sit here and say we didn't worry at all, because we did. We knew that we needed to continue to trust the One who has ALWAYS provided for our NEEDS. Philippians 4:6 is a verse we read over and over throughout our adoption. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." We were so thankful to have His promises to hold on to through our adoption journey and we still are thankful today. He continues to reveal Himself to us daily, showing His unending love and faithfulness.
